The Georgia Gwinnett baseball team suffered a walk-off defeat on day two of the Association of Independent Institutions Baseball championship tournament Saturday, falling 5-4 to Cal State San Marcos on a play at the plate two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning in Lynn, Mass.
The Grizzlies, the designated road team, built 3-0 and 4-2 leads during the game, but runs in the bottom of the fifth and eighth innings by the Cougars (30-17) tied the game.
GGC (45-10) will now play at 10 a.m. Sunday in an elimination game against host fourth-seeded Fisher, looking to advance to a Sunday afternoon contest against second-seeded LSU Alexandria, which edged Fisher Saturday.
Against CSUSM, the Grizzlies were led by Zach Alvord’s third home run of the season, a two-run shot to make it 3-0.
In the deciding inning, the Cougars put runners on first and second base with nobody out. After reliever Zeke McGranahan picked up a pair of outs, including a strikeout, a single up the middle was knocked down and produced a play at the plate, with the Cougars registering the winning run.
