The fourth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett baseball team’s rally came up just short in a 5-4 loss at third-ranked Faulkner (Ala.) Wednesday evening in Montgomery, Ala.
Faulkner (38-10) won its second game over GGC (40-8) in two days as it is the first time the Grizzlies have lost back-to-back games all year.
Fifteen strikeouts set back the potent Grizzly offense, though GGC still outhit Faulkner, 7-6.
Sophomore Sheldon Connor suffered his first loss of the year despite allowing just four hits over 6.1 innings to fall to 7-1.
The Grizzlies trailed 3-0 by the fifth inning and did not climb onto the boar until the seventh inning, when Sloan Strickland scored on a wild pitch. A Faulkner double play ended the GGC threat.
The Eagles tallied two more runs in the bottom of the inning as the Grizzly deficit swelled to 5-1.
The Grizzlies tallied three runs against Eagle relievers in the ninth inning, closing the gap to a single run, but a final strikeout with runners on the corners kept GGC from tying the game.
Five of GGC’s eight losses have come against ranked teams.
Wednesday’s defeat wrapped up a season-long six-game road trip for the Grizzlies as GGC will return home Friday to begin a two-game series against Emory, split between Lawrenceville and Atlanta.
First pitch Friday is set for 7 p.m. at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.
