GGC 15, Hiwassee 6
The Georgia Gwinnett offense had 15 hits, including six doubles and a homer, to erase an early deficit and roll past Hiwassee (Tenn.) on the road Tuesday in Madisonville, Tenn., by a 15-6 score.
The Grizzlies trailed 3-1 through three innings but used a four-run fifth inning and a seven-run ninth inning to cruise to the win.
Jake Fields belted his first homer of the year and drove in four runs, while Zach Alvord and Garitt Church had three RBIs apiece.
Ten different players have now homered on the year for GGC, which improved to 34-5 on the year with the win. The Grizzlies also completed a four-game sweep of Hiwassee in the process.
Reliever Jonathan Spitler picked up the win for GGC to improve to 4-0, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings.
The Grizzlies opened the scoring with a run in the first but the Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the inning and added two more in the second.
Each team scored a pair of runs in the fourth to make it 5-3, but the Grizzlies would score the game’s next 12 runs to build a 15-5 lead.
Hiwassee did not tally its final run until the ninth as Christian Van Camp and Jovanni Cruz also made relief appearances for the Grizzlies.
Alvord doubled twice for GGC as he, Fields, Phillip Bates and Sloan Strickland combined for 10 hits.
The Grizzlies return home to begin a three-game series with LSU Alexandria on Friday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
