Box Score
A second-inning RBI from Sloan Strickland was all the offense the Grizzlies needed as senior starter Tyler Carpenter held No. 17 Southern Poly scoreless over eight innings in a 1-0 Georgia Gwinnett baseball victory in Marietta on Tuesday afternoon.
The Grizzlies ran their winning streak to 12 games and improved to 18-3 overall. The Hornets, who had handed GGC two of its three losses on the year, fell to 13-7 as the season series evened at two games apiece.
Carpenter finished with seven strikeouts on the day, yielding just five hits with a pair of walks. Zeke McGranahan came on to record his third save of the year and preserve the shutout in the ninth inning.
It was the Grizzlies’ second shutout win of the year and GGC improved to 4-0 on the road. Georgia Gwinnett has now allowed three or fewer runs in nine of the team’s last 11 games.
Strickland led GGC with two hits, while Phillip Bates, William Paschal and Robbie Payne added one hit apiece.
The Grizzlies tallied the only run they would need in the top of the second inning. Ty Abbott, who was hit by a pitch and stole a base, came in to score the game’s lone run one a one-out double by Strickland.
All four games between GGC and SPSU were won by the road team.
The Grizzlies begin a 10-game homestand on Friday when they start a three-game series against St. Francis (Ind.) at 7 p.m. at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.
