The Georgia Gwinnett baseball team improved to 33-5 on the season by finishing off a three-game sweep of Emmanuel (Ga.) on Sunday with 8-2 and 11-5 victories in Franklin Springs, Ga.
The Grizzlies belted 25 hits over the two games, led by four from Sloan Strickland.
The Lions fell to 12-22 as GGC wrapped up the series that began on Friday in Lawrenceville by improving to 8-1 on the road.
Game One- GGC 8, Emmanuel 2
The Grizzlies were paced by two hits apiece from Phillip Bates, Robbie Payne and William Paschal in rallying from a 2-0 deficit to score the game’s final eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Sheldon Connor moved to 6-0 on the mound this year by striking out four batters over 5.0 innings in the seven-inning game.
A three-run sixth inning pushed GGC in front before a five-run seventh added insurance for the Grizzlies.
Robbie Payne drove in a game-high two runs while five other players all had one RBI.
Game Two- GGC 11, Emmanuel 5
Once again the Grizzlies erased a 2-0 deficit, this time taking the lead for good during a four-run fifth inning.
Strickland and Christian Van Camp both tallied three hits while Fields and Garitt Church had two each. Van Camp’s four RBIs led all players.
Drew Riley, the first of six GGC pitchers in the game, picked up the victory by striking out four and allowing four runs over 6.0 innings.
Emmanuel scored one run in each of the first and second innings before GGC tied the game in the fourth. The Lions briefly went back ahead with two runs in the bottom of the inning, but four GGC scores in the top of the fifth opened the game up for the Grizzlies.
GGC added two in the sixth and three in the ninth while Emmanuel scored just one more time in the game.
The Grizzlies have outscored their opponents for the season, 369-143. GGC visits Hiwassee for a 2 p.m. contest on Tuesday before hosting LSU Alexandria in a weekend series in Lawrenceville.
