Box Score

In its first out-of-state road trip, the Georgia Gwinnett baseball team slugged its way to 10-1 and 9-0 victories at Loyola University New Orleans on Monday in doubleheader action.

The Grizzlies have now won a season-best seven straight games and improved to 13-3 overall. The Wolfpack fell to 8-7.

The teams updated their schedule to a Monday doubleheader with inclement weather in the area.

Game One- GGC 10, Loyola 1

The Grizzlies used a seven-run sixth inning to coast past the Wolfpack in the opener as Ty Abbott, Zach Alvord, Phillip Bates and William Paschal each had two hits for the GGC attack.

Starter Tyler Carpenter racked up eight strikeouts over six shutout innings, improving to 2-0 on the year.

Paschal doubled and scored in a two-run second inning and Alvord scored on a fifth inning single as GGC took a 3-0 lead.

With Carpenter holding the Wolfpack at bay, the Grizzly offense opened things up seven more runs in the sixth inning, using six hits and taking advantage of a Loyola error to bat around and go up, 10-0.

Jovanni Cruz tossed the final inning on the mound as the Wolfpack scored its lone run on a bases-loaded walk in the last frame of the seven-inning game.

Game Two- GGC 9, Loyola 0

The Grizzly offense belted 16 hits and GGC got another stellar outing on the mound in recording its first shutout win of the season.

Alvord and Christian Van Camp each had a game-high three hits while Abbott and Robbie Payne chipped in two apiece.

Georgia Gwinnett starter Brandon MacKinnon picked up his second victory of the year by striking out six over five shutout innings. Four GGC relievers helped in the combined shutout, totaling 11 strikeouts.

After the Grizzlies built a 3-0 lead through three innings, a five-run fifth blew the game open. With three singles, a double and the help of three Loyola errors, the Grizzlies opened up an 8-0 advantage in the inning.

Another run scored in the seventh on a fielder’s choice.

The Grizzlies return to Lawrenceville for a 7 p.m. home contest against Toccoa Falls on Wednesday.
