The Georgia Gwinnett baseball team (11-3) completed a three-game sweep over Voorhees (S.C.) (0-8) by taking both ends of the teams’ doubleheader Saturday at the Grizzly Baseball Complex in Lawrenceville.
The Grizzlies captured 13-3 and 16-3 wins to run their winning streak to five games and improve to 11-3 overall. Voorhees dropped to 0-8.
Eli Green collected five RBIs on the day with two runs driven in during the first game and three more in the second.
Game 1: GGC 13, VC 3 (6 innings)
Pat Long paced the GGC offense with three runs driven in while Zach Alvord, Christian Van Camp and Green each had two more.
Starter Jonathan Spitler (1-0) earned his first win after throwing 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Andy Threatt, Ryan Turner and Tyler Oglesby each pitched an inning of relief for the Grizzlies.
Voorhees jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of hits, including a two-run double. The Tigers would add their only other score in the top of the fifth.
Georgia Gwinnett roared back with six runs on two hits in the bottom of the first. Van Camp led the action for the Grizzlies with a two-run single and a stolen base.
The Grizzlies added five more runs in the second inning on five hits, all singles, including a two-run base knock by Long.
GGC scored single runs in the third and sixth innings to end the scheduled seven-inning contest early.
Game 2: GGC 16, VC 3 (5 innings)
In game two, starter Drew Riley (1-0) earned his first win after only allowing one run on one hit in 3.0 innings of work. Jovanni Cruz and Austin Smith both pitched an inning of relief.
Voorhees again took an early lead with one run in the top of the first, but GGC scored four runs in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles by Robbie Payne, Sloan Strickland and William Paschal.
Strickland and Green both had two hits in the game. Kyle Norton scored three runs for the Grizzlies.
Georgia Gwinnett also scored five runs on four hits in the second inning, with an RBI-triple by John Fidanza and a run-scoring single off the bat of Strickland.
The Tigers added one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, but the Grizzlies’ seven-run fourth put the game out of reach.
GGC scored seven times in the fourth on two hits, a double and a bases-loaded triple by Green.
The Grizzlies now travel to New Orleans for a two-game set against Loyola (N.O.) on Monday and Tuesday. GGC returns home Wednesday evening against Toccoa Falls.
