The Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer team battled No. 10 Northwood University (Fla.) to a draw through much of the first half before eventually falling by a 3-1 score Friday afternoon in West Palm Beach, Fla.

The loss was the first of the season for the Grizzlies (3-1).

Sophomore Mackenzie Bailey tallied for GGC, which put four shots on goal and was tied 1-1 on the Seahawks’ home field until the final seconds of the first half.

Louise Andersson collected a rebound off a Mo Gutierrez save and tallied the go-ahead score in the 45th minute. Helen Lynskey and Hannah Lindstrom added scores for Northwood (2-0-1).

Gutierrez and Alex Hays combined for five saves in net for GGC.

Bailey scored her first goal of the season in the 40th minute with an assist from senior Jocelyn Baker as the Grizzlies capitalized on a free kick opportunity.

“As good of a team as they are, we were able to run with them for 90 minutes, defend and still attack,” Grizzlies head coach Domenic Martelli said. “Give Northwood a lot of credit because the way they defend and put pressure on you, it makes it very tough to play. We did a great job of neutralizing their attack for most of the game and overall we were tough.”

Georgia Gwinnett is now 1-1 against Sun Conference opponents this year after knocking off SCAD to begin the season.

The Grizzlies travel to Miami Gardens, Fla., for a 12 noon Sunday showdown at St. Thomas University (2-0). GGC faces four of the Sun’s top five preseason teams this year, including St. Thomas.

“If we play the way we did today and keep that standard, we’ll look to have a good result on Sunday,” Martelli added.
