Baseball Blasts Loyola to Cap 30-Win Season

Junior Christian Van Camp drove in four runs as the Georgia Gwinnett baseball team ended its first-ever season on a high note by handling Loyola University New Orleans in doubleheader action Friday night in Lawrenceville, reaching 30 wins on the year.

The Grizzlies posted a 14-3 victory in the opener before sailing to an 8-1 victory in game two to finish their inaugural year 30-25.

Georgia Gwinnett belted 28 hits over the two games, finishing 17-9 in Lawrenceville.

“Tonight was a great end to a great season,” Grizzlies head coach Brad Stromdahl said. “We really played well as a team in all phases. From pitching to getting hits to our defense, it was a total team effort.”

Game One- GGC 14, Loyola 3

The Grizzlies used two hits apiece from five different players and three RBIs from Van Camp, erasing an early Wolf Pack lead with 14 straight runs.

Freshman starter Frank Warren went 8.0 innings on the mound, earning his fifth win of the season by allowing just one earned run with six strikeouts.

Loyola loaded the bases in the first and tallied the first score for a 1-0 advantage.

Georgia Gwinnett responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning and seven more runs over the next four frames.

A four-spot in the seventh finished the Grizzlies’ scoring.

Joe Albertson, who pitched in both games Friday, finished things off on the mound.

Antonio Allen, Phillip Bates, Billy Best, Sloan Strickland and Jereid Woods each scored two runs for GGC.

Game Two- GGC 8, Loyola 1

The Grizzlies built a 5-0 lead through five innings, led by three hits apiece from Allen and Robbie Payne.

Tyler Carpenter began a game that featured six GGC pitchers by striking out five over three scoreless innings.

The GGC staff combined for eight strikeouts in holding Loyola to a lone score in the sixth inning.

Pat Long drove in two runs with a pair of hits while Strickland tripled and scored. GGC belted 13 hits after racking up 15 in game one.

The Grizzlies finish the 2013 season with a .314 team batting average with nine players above the .300 mark. Payne drove in a team-high 44 runs.

The GGC pitching staff finished with a team ERA of 4.72.
