Smith, Davis Power GGC to Sweep of Voorhees

Freshman Austin Smith earned his first win on the mound and added three hits at the plate while freshman A.J. Davis had five RBIs over two games to lead the Georgia Gwinnett baseball team to 12-2 and 13-3 victories Tuesday over Voorhees College (S.C.) in Lawrenceville.

The Grizzlies (24-13) improved to 13-5 at home this season, finishing a five-game season sweep of the Tigers.

Davis and Angelo Lombardo had four hits on the day for GGC while Phillip Bates added three.

Smith (1-3) and Kyle Norton (1-0) earned wins on the mound.

In game one, the Grizzlies spread out the offensive attack over the final five innings of the run-rule win, building an 8-2 lead through four innings.

Lombardo went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs while Davis and Eli Green also drove in two apiece. Jereid Woods had two of GGC’s 10 hits.

Norton allowed just one hit over three innings of work in relief of starter Dreyvis Perez, who struck out two over three innings.

In the second game, GGC jumped out to a 7-0 advantage through two innings as Bates, Davis, Green and Andrew Prater all had doubles.

The Grizzlies added five stolen bases and after the Tigers had cut the lead to 7-3, GGC scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for the run-rule win.

Smith went 3-for-3 with an RBI at the plate while striking out five over five innings on the mound.

Davis went 3-for-4 as he and Green each drove in three runs.

The Grizzlies are outscoring their opponents in the first inning this season, 60-13.

Georgia Gwinnett returns to the diamond Wednesday night, hosting Southern Poly (24-12) at 7 p.m. as the teams play for the third time in as many days.
