Grizzlies Topped by SPSU, Host Champs Wednesday

April 16, 2013

So Poly 13, GGC 2

So Poly 3, GGC 0

The Georgia Gwinnett baseball team was led by three hits from Austin Smith but suffered 13-2 and 3-0 home losses to Southern Poly Tuesday evening in Lawrenceville.

The Grizzlies (26-21) also got three total hits from Robbie Payne and a strong complete-game outing from Tyler Carpenter in game two but the Hornets (31-16) belted 24 total hits to sweep the day.

The Hornets built an insurmountable lead in the opener, keyed by five hits from Josue Quinones. GGC finally climbed on the board in the last inning with scores from Angelo Lombardo and Billy Best.

Starter Drew Riley struck out six batters in 5.2 innings of work, but suffered his third defeat of the season.

Smith, Best and Antonio Allen each had two hits in the loss.

Things were much tighter in game two, thanks to a solid outing by Carpenter and Payne’s two hits. GGC managed just three total hits in the game however, and Hornet scores in the third, fifth and seventh innings were the difference.

Carpenter struck out five and was able to scatter eight hits over seven innings.

Error-free defense also kept GGC close.

The Grizzlies turn around quickly, hosting defending NAIA national champion Tennessee Wesleyan on Wednesday in a 5 p.m. contest. The Grizzlies look to avenge a 2-1 defeat to the #10 Bulldogs back in February.
