March 29, 2013

EC 5, GGC 3

EC 3, GGC 0

Junior Robbie Payne continued a 21-game hitting streak but the Georgia Gwinnett baseball team lost a pair of games to Emmanuel College on Friday, 5-3 and 3-0, as the bats went cold at the GGC Baseball Complex in Lawrenceville.

The Grizzlies (21-12) were held scoreless for the first time this season in game two, managing just three hits.

In the opener, GGC fell behind 4-0 in the first inning and rallied to put the winning run at the plate in the final inning but could not complete the comeback.

Christian Van Camp drove in two runs on two hits while Jereid Woods added a pair of hits.

Angelo Lombardo threw five effective innings of relief for the Grizzlies in game one, allowing just one earned run with five strikeouts.

Payne and Van Camp doubled in the GGC fourth as the Grizzlies got on the board.

The Lions added a run in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the inning, Pat Long doubled to score Phillip Bates and Van Camp added his second RBI double to make it 5-3.

The Grizzlies put two aboard in the final inning with a pair of hits but never drew any closer in the defeat.

In game two, starter Dreyvis Perez gave the Grizzlies six-plus strong innings.

The GGC bats were held in check by Steven Barnett, who struck out eight for Emmanuel in the complete-game win.

The Grizzlies broke up a no-hit bid in the fifth inning with a double from Woods down the right field line.

Payne knocked a single up the middle in the sixth to extend a hitting streak that dates back to March 2.

Woods added a second hit in the game but the Grizzlies went scoreless for the first time all year.

The Grizzlies return to action Monday. The team starts another busy week with a doubleheader at Southern Poly in Marietta, starting at 1 p.m.
