Senior forward Alejandro Duque had a goal and an assist to lead the Georgia Gwinnett men’s soccer team to its 10th win of the season Wednesday afternoon in a 4-1 comeback victory at Reinhardt University in Waleska, Ga.
After falling behind 1-0, GGC posted its second straight comeback win by scoring four times on 23 shots.
Duque opened the Grizzly scoring in the 25th minute with a 40-yard ball that bounced over the Reinhardt goalkeeper, then assisted on the go-ahead goal to midfielder Andres Molano just before halftime.
Senior Tom Butler and freshman Martin Lugo also got on the board for a GGC squad that moved to 10-2-1 with the win. Reinhardt fell to 4-8-2 with the Senior Day loss.
“They scored early and it woke us up as we really got after them,” Grizzlies head coach Steve DeCou said after the win. “We went on the road and played well today against a strong NAIA opponent. I thought we made a statement with our performance, hats off to the boys.”
Coming out of halftime, Butler put away his team-leading 15th score of the season just 18 seconds into the second period. Lugo’s 10th goal of the year in the 87th minute finished the scoring as the Grizzlies won their sixth road game in seven tries.
“Alejandro Duque had his best game of the year for us,” DeCou added about his senior forward. “Now the task will be to stay mentally focused as our next three opponents are teams we’ve beaten earlier this season.”
The Grizzlies return home for a Friday showdown with Florida College at 4 p.m., before facing Oakwood University on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Lawrenceville.
