New-Look Battery Ready for 2026 Softball Challenges

The Georgia Gwinnett College softball pitching staff, blessed with two experienced and talented seniors, led the NAIA last season with a 1.22 earned run average.

Leading the way in the circle was multiple All-American Annalise Jarvis, while Kailynn James emerged to lead the nation with a dazzling 0.88 ERA and was the winning pitcher as the program clinched its third straight trip to the NAIA World Series.

Head Coach Kat Ihlenburg has found replacements for that duo, along with the primary catcher, and expectations remain high for a 2026 squad that begins the season ranked No. 4 in the Preseason Top 25 poll.

GGCAthletics.com begins its preseason position preview series by examining the pitching staff and catchers making up the battery combination for the upcoming season.

We had a concentrated effort throughout last fall’s practices in coming together to form this year’s team. We love that we have World Series stories and had All-Americans from last spring, but that was all accomplished by the 2025 team. This year’s team is ready to create its own identity,

GGC’s new identity for 2026 begins with an entirely new battery unit.

“One player (pitcher) doesn’t make or break a season. That’s done by each player doing what she is capable of contributing to the team. If one person slacks their effort, that might be the necessary piece that we’re missing for that given day,” the coach assessed in a preseason interview. “The last three seasons we have finished strong (advancing to the World Series) because those teams adapted the mindset of ‘Do My Job Really Well’ and being ‘Strong and Steady’.”

Senior Kailyn Berry returns to the circle after missing last season due to an injury. The right hander won NAIA postseason games during past Opening Round and World Series appearances. She has a 24-17 career record and started 46 games from 2022 to the 2024 seasons. Berry garnered second All-Continental Athletic Conference team honors in 2023.

Meanwhile, sophomore Isabelle Teems made a strong adjustment to the college game. The right hander had a 6-1 record across 14 appearances, including 10 starts, with 46 innings last spring.

“We don’t need our pitchers to throw perfect games or have games with them tossing 21 strikeouts. We need them to produce when they are called upon and execute the right pitch in key situations,” said Ihlenburg.

Rounding out the pitching staff will be freshmen Addie Self and Tatum Helsom, who had strong high school and travel ball careers.

“Both of our newcomers had clean innings in our fall scrimmage against the NCAA Division 1 University of Georgia, getting three straight outs, but also had moments where they got hit,” the coach remarked. “They just need to find that middle ground where they may allow a run and then post some scoreless innings than allowing multiple runs across consecutive innings.”

The other end of the battery connection will have a different look following the graduation of multi-year starter Angelica Gallegos. Sophomore Samantha Fadely brings experience by appearing in 20 games. She collected four doubles and hit one home run in 2025.

Freshman Brooke Rockhold is another option behind the plate after being a three-time first all-state team selection during strong high school career at Eagles Landing Christian Academy (Georgia).

Fadely hit
Sophomore Samantha Fadely had some clutch hits during the 2025 season, including a go-ahead double at nationally ranked Mobile (Alabama)

“Offensive performance is going to pick who plays catcher. Brooke was one of our best hitters in the fall and Sam had some exciting moments last season,” said Ihlenburg.

Georgia Gwinnett College is scheduled to begin the 2026 season with a home doubleheader against Montreat College (North Carolina) on February 10 at the Grizzly Softball Complex, starting at 2 p.m.
