Women’s Basketball Featuring Athletic Guards for First Season

A deep and versatile group of ball handers and shooters has the Georgia Gwinnett College women’s basketball team excited about the program’s inaugural season.

Head Coach Tory Wooley is blessed to have eight guards to rotate throughout the lineup for the historic 2025-26 campaign that’s getting ready to tip off on October 23.

GGCAthletics.com concludes its preseason position preview series of the team by examining the players that will spread the floor to apply the Grizzlies’ full-court offensive and defensive pressure against opponents.

Basketball is becoming a positionless game. Our offense predicates on ball movement and running ball screen action. That means our guards need to be able to put the ball on the floor and shoot the ball. We emphasize floor spacing

Sophomore Jamya Griffin is one of the team’s four primary ball handers, joining freshmen Christen Collins, Christal Collins and Rachel Porter.

Griffin arrived in Lawrenceville after earning first all-conference team honors at Calhoun Community College (Alabama). She also gained all-tournament honors in the Alabama Community College Conference.

“Jamya is exceptional in the open floor. She has great size, at 5-foot-10, and can play the point guard position, while being versatile enough to play other positions on the floor for us,” remarked Wooley. “Jamya is a scorer, with a good shot, and can also get her teammates involved as a passer. She is a special talent.”

Christen and Christal are cousins from Chattanooga, Tennessee, where they had distinguished high school careers. Christen was ranked as the No. 12 point guard in 2025 among Georgia prep ranks and helped Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe to a region title. Christen is Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High school’s all-time leading scorer in school history on both girls and boys’ basketball teams.  Meanwhile, Christal helped Florida State University Schools capture a district championship.

Porter brings toughness to the guard position after leading all Georgia prep players and standing among the top five nationally in defensive charges taken while starring at Alexander Comprehensive High School. The 5-foot-6 player also earned multiple all-region honors.

“All our guards complement each other and have different strengths. Christal can get downhill with the best of them. It’s going to be hard for teams to keep her out of the paint. She has an attack-first mindset. She is special in the open floor,” said Wooley.

The coach added, “Rachel is a tough-minded player. She can play multiple positions, whether it’s with the ball in her hands or off the ball. Christen can shoot the ball while also getting downhill and being a phenomenal passer.”

Adding outside shooting to the Grizzlies’ offensive attack will be junior Nevaeh Mageo, who finished her career at Palomar College (California) with 200 made 3-pointers and received all conference honors as well while junior Laila Williams averaged 12 points per game and is another transfer guard who adds experience to the unit. Meanwhile 5-foot-11 freshman Markiesa Lancaster brings athleticism and versatility that can play multiple positions as well.

We have players that have good shot selection by moving the ball from one side of the floor to the other, emphasizing a touch in the paint (near the basket), and shooting in rhythm. All three of those things will quantify in us getting a really good shot,
